Mamaroneck Elementary School Accident: Child, adult struck by vehicle near Mamaroneck elementary school, hospitalized

An adult and a child were hit by a vehicle while walking to Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School on Thursday, a spokesperson for the school district reported. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital.

The incident occurred around 8:40 a.m., approximately half a block from the school, on Mamaroneck Avenue across from the shopping center that includes Chipotle, CVS, and North Shore Farms, according to the district.

"We are collaborating with authorities to monitor the situation and provide necessary support for our students, staff, and families. Our thoughts and hearts are with the entire MAS community," said Mamaroneck schools spokespeople Wendy Baker and Jackie Burton in a statement.

At the scene, a Royal Coach Lines mini-bus was stopped in front of the shopping center, with a yellow backpack lying in the road about 20 feet behind it. The backpack was removed from the scene at 11:23 a.m. and placed in a police SUV, and the mini-bus was towed away at 12:13 p.m.

John Hunter, a Mamaroneck resident, was leaving mass at St. Vito’s Catholic Church when he heard the accident. He arrived to find that a woman and a boy had been struck. EMS were promptly on the scene, assisting the mother. Hunter went to check on the boy.

“There was nothing I could do at that time. It was just catastrophic," Hunter told the Journal News/lohud.

The block of Mamaroneck Avenue in the area is closed off and secured with police tape. The Village of Mamaroneck police have set up a tent nearby, and the Westchester County Medical Examiner is also present at the scene.

Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School is holding a full day of classes today, but as of 11:20 a.m., the playgrounds and fields were empty. The scheduled dismissal time is 3:12 p.m.
