Lake Orion Student Death 2024 : Obituary : One Died At Houston National Robotics Competition

School officials reported last week that a student from Lake Orion High School passed away while on a field trip to Texas.


In a statement sent to parents on Friday, Ben Kirby, superintendent of Lake Orion Community Schools, expressed his "deep regret" for the recent loss that had befallen the school community. Strange circumstances led to the unexpected death of one of our current high school pupils on Friday, April 19. The friends and relatives of the victims have our deepest sympathies and prayers.


An April 15 Facebook post by school authorities announced that the school's robotics team would be traveling to Houston to compete in the FIRSTS robotics world championships. The competitions were held last week from Wednesday through Saturday.

Kirby also mentioned that a crisis team of specialists will be available at Lake Orion High School and around the district to assist with the needs of students and staff who are grieving.

"We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to support our high school students through this tragedy," according to the letter.
The student was reportedly in Houston with other members of the high school's robotics team.

The following message was put on the official Facebook page of the robotics team: An emotional Sunday post from Lake Orion Robotics FIRST Team 302 expressed gratitude for the tremendous support they have received at this difficult time. We will disclose additional information when the time is right, but for now we are trying to protect the family's privacy.

On the group's Facebook page, robotics teams and fans from all throughout the nation sent their thoughts and sympathy.

"Sending our deepest sympathy and love to the parents and entire team, FIRST Team 302 community from RoboGym #3950 Glen Head, N.Y.," a user wrote. "My thoughts are with your team at this difficult time... I am very sorry for your loss," another person remarked. Team 4020's mother in Kingsport, Tennessee.
