Obituary: Keyon Day Springfield IL Death : Southeast High School Student Shot, Killed In Shooting Near Taylor and Cornell Avenues

A student from Southeast High School was identified as the 16-year-old student who was shot on Wednesday in the 2300 block of Taylor Avenue, according to District 186, which has validated this information.

In response to a report of a male person who had been shot beside the roadway, Springfield Police Department officers arrived at the 2300 block of Taylor Avenue Street at 8:42 in the morning.

According to the police, they found a male victim who was 16 years old and had at least one gunshot wound to his lower torso that they found upon their arrival.


The victim was sent to HSHS St. John's Hospital via ambulance, where he had surgery but ultimately was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. Keyon Day has been confirmed to be the unidentified victim.

Both Southeast High School and Ball Charter School were placed on a soft lockdown status during the early phase of the reaction in order to guarantee the safety of all students and faculty members inside the school. An initial statement regarding the soft lockdown was also published by the District immediately after it was implemented.


It is anticipated that District 186 will have support accessible for the remainder of the week. Over the course of as long as it is necessary, they will maintain additional security and patrols at Southeast High School as well as in the surrounding area of Ball Charter and SSHS.


The Criminal Investigations Division is currently conducting an active investigation into the event, and any more information that becomes available will be given by the division as it becomes available.
